Deep down in Dixie tonight, Alabama will give us insight into some of the purest coalition politics for both parties. The Democratic Party's primary tonight will be heavily African-American. The Republicans' primary will be heavily white and Evangelical, and extremely conservative. Neither primary is expected to be all that competitive. Even so, this state is getting a lot of attention.
Republicans:
This is Donald Trump Country. He has had "yyyyuuuuugggggeeee" rallies in this state, as early as last Summer. Things like building a wall on the Mexican border and banning Muslims have great support in this state, and he is now the endorsed candidate of their popular Senator Jeff Sessions.
If there is any pause on the runaway that Trump should enjoy tonight, it will come from Evangelical voters or "Old Money" southerners that are not on board with "the Donald's" message. I don't think there's much threat of that tonight.
Democrats:
Hillary Clinton should win this state handily tonight. The only question in my mind is if she wins by a margin similar to South Carolina. She should win handily across South-Central Alabama, the heaviest concentration of African-Americans in the state.
