Christie Should Resign

I sometimes think we overplay the significance of a public figure being at a funeral- for instance, the uproar over what funerals the President of the United States shows up at. There are usually protocols around that (First Ladies attend a First Lady's funeral, for instance), and sometimes there are things we don't know about those decisions (like whether or not the family wants the circus). Often times, I'm not sure if the presence of a political leader is even what the grieving family wants, or needs at that time. I think we over-debate these matters, usually.

Yesterday though, Chris Christie stepped in it. It wasn't bad enough that he essentially skipped out as being Governor of New Jersey for all of last year. That's fine, he was running for President. Then he dropped out because no one was voting for him, and endorsed Donald Trump. Now he's running around the country for Trump, campaigning wherever he's told. That's annoyed some people. Now? How about this one:
Rather than pay his respects Monday at the funeral of State Trooper Sean Cullen — who died in the line of duty in a fatal accident — Christie flew to North Carolina and Florida to play sidekick, again, to short-tempered vulgarian Donald Trump. This after vowing he would not be a “full-time surrogate” for the bloviator’s campaign.
I do get it- Christie isn't interested in being governor anymore. As a decent human being though, he could have been anywhere in the world other than where he was, during that funeral. Maybe the family didn't want him there, I don't know (seems odd though, the Lieutenant Governor went). Whatever is the case, if he were in Trenton instead of campaigning, this would be less of a big deal. For me, as the son of retired law enforcement, I just found this particularly offensive. Maybe Chris should at least fake caring about New Jersey.

Or maybe he should just resign.
