It's hard to get a delegate slot for Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton. It's very hard to get an at-large slot in Pennsylvania, and it's very difficult to do so at the district level. There were only seven slots and one alternate in the 17th Congressional District of Pennsylvania. Both of the main candidates in this race had a lot more than seven or eight applicants.
The Sanders campaign did something pretty unprecedented. They selected five Easton area activists as delegate candidates in the 17th Congressional District. Adrian Shanker and John Ferguson of Palmer Township, Blandine Mballa-Fonkeu and Sheila Ferguson of Forks Township, and Tara Stephenson of Easton all were selected to appear on the ballot as delegates for Sanders. If Sanders wins enough delegates and they receive the needed number of votes to win one of those slots, they could end up in Philadelphia in July.
Obviously this doesn't change my view of the race, but I think it's great to see our little area of the country get so much love from a major national campaign. I'm happy for all of them.
