Fifty. That's my goal for the number of professional baseball games I'll go to in 2016. Since I was down in the area last night, I met up with a buddy to see the first of the 50, the Phillies Futures Game in Reading. The Phillies met a team of some of their top prospects at First Energy Ballpark to open up the 50th season of affiliation between the Phillies and Reading as their AA team, the longest such run in MLB today. To celebrate, the organization did not cheat their fans.
The Phillies beat their top prospects 19-4. It was as lopsided as it sounds. The prospects team was loaded with future MLB talent, but you got the idea that there's a bit of a gap still between them. J.P. Crawford, Nick Williams, Roman Quinn, Jorge Alfaro, Scott Kingery, Brock Stassi, and Dylan Cozens were all in a line-up that packed lots of minor league punch, and while they got out-classed, they did some good things. Cozens, Quinn, and Crawford all homered. Unfortunately, the pitching didn't get too many guys out. Zach Eflin surrendered nine earned runs in his three innings, Edubray Ramos one, and Mark Appel six in his three innings. While Eflin and Appel didn't fare too well, they both are big prospects, so it was nice to see them. The stadium radar gun had both in the mid-to-upper 90's in their appearances.
The Phillies had a fun night. Odubel Herrera, Cesar Hernandez, Freddy Galvis, Cedric Hunter, Tyler Goeddel, Darin Ruf, Maikel Franco, and Ryan Howard all hit homers in the blowout. There were a few bloopers, but the team went out and made the minor leaguers look like minor leaguers.
I got a 32 ounce Yuengling and a "Churgler" (chicken and burger) and have to give the food a passing-with-flying-colors grade. The seats are all pretty good in the ballpark, so the view is great. People do seem to get up and walk around a little more than in Allentown, but that could have just been tonight. The ballpark experience was an A.
The great part of this game is that there were so many prospects I had never seen before this game live and in person. Many of them I expect to see for years to come, some clearly won't make it though too. It was great getting down to Reading and getting a look at the players of the future- even if the current guys were giving them a beating.
