Democratic Primary Update- Any Minute Now

This weekend, Hillary Clinton swept the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, putting her within a stone's throw of the Democratic nomination. The delegate count at this point:

  • Hillary Clinton- 1,809 pledged delegates, 548 super-delegates, 2,357 total delegates (needs 26 more).
  • Bernie Sanders- 1,520 pledged delegates, 46 super-delegates, 1,566 total delegates (trails by 791).
So here's what will happen next. Hillary Clinton will receive 26 delegates without any effort, so she will effectively become the presumptive nominee at 8 pm on Tuesday when New Jersey polls close (or possibly before if super-delegates endorse her). At 11 pm, when California polls close, Clinton will pass the 2,026 mark of pledged delegates, meaning she will have won the majority from the people.

Sanders can decide for himself if he stays in beyond Tuesday. His hope is that super-delegates will change their mind by the end of July in Philadelphia. That seems to be highly unlikely, since she will have won the majority of the votes and pledged delegates. With that said, Sanders has certainly earned the option of either having a roll call vote or making some form of deal with the presumptive nominee on speaking and on the platform.
