Scott Parsons will tell you i'm a little too partisan. Trust me, I know. I like Scott though, we do get along, even though he's wrong on the partisan thing. He's been a really good councilman though, and has brought civility and respectability back to the Slate Belt's County Council seat, after years of Ron Angle showing up at the courthouse to make trouble. Gone are the days of a rogue councilman showing up at the courthouse with a drill. Gone are the days of the Slate Belt's rogue councilman pushing to sell Gracedale and it's residents to the highest bidder. Scott Parsons has governed with solid common-sense, and works to solve the problems. That's what government is all about. Politics are about values and positions, and sometimes grandstanding to support them. Governing is supposed to be about solutions. Scott is a lot better at the governing side than the politics side. That's why he should be re-elected.
Scott's opponent is an ambitious Tea Party radical named Matthew Dietz. In 2014, he tried to challenge Congressman Cartwright, but lost the primary. He wants to privatize just about everything the county does. He wants government to do nothing, and to simply be a non-factor. That's great for the wealthy, the healthy, the smart, and the blessed. That's terrible for the people that need a government, the people who need county government. The county government spends about $1 million a day, and $.48 of that on the dollar is on human services. These are services for the elderly, services for children, services for the mentally ill, and services for our veterans, to name some. When Dietz talks about cutting county government, please understand that most of the other $.52 on the dollar is not available to be cut. Cuts to the county government will directly impact these disadvantaged people who live in our community.
The Slate Belt is a great area, a tight-knit community, and it deserves a uniting representative in county government, not one that wants to go back to the Angle-era lunacy and fights. I'm sure that Mr. Dietz is nice, and i'm sure he means well for the community, or at least believes he does. Electing him though is a step backwards. Parsons is a good guy, who does a good job governing. No one "deserves" a seat in government, but Parsons should be returned for a second term.
